A favorite getaway for gourmands in New York’s Greenwich Village, Gotham Bar and Grill—named the city’s best American restaurant by Zagat—is celebrating summer with a new Mediterranean-inspired menu from chef Alfred Portale that will be served until the end of August. Known as one of the culinary auteurs of New American cuisine, Portale allows his Sicilian heritage to shine with dishes that fuse traditional fare found along the French and Italian coasts. Aptly named Gotham Riviera, the selections comprise a six-course dining experience.

Preliminary piattini (small-plate appetizers) include croquettes filled with peekytoe crab, corn, and aioli; squash blossom and goat cheese beignets; charcuterie of saucisson sec (dry-cured sausage) complemented by lavender mustard; and a vegetable crudité. Entering next is an escarole salad with Sicilian pistachios and pecorino reserve cheese, followed by linguini rich with ruby shrimp, calamari, scallops, and anchovies. Rounding out the seafood entrées is branzino, sea bass served over a ratatouille of roasted fennel, tapenade, tomato confit, and pesto. For the denouement, duck is served with figs, turnips, lavender honey, and herbes de Provence. Any sweet tooth will be sated by the mascarpone mousse, a lemon olive oil cake with apricots and rosemary ice cream, for dessert. Priced at $85 per person, the dinner also comes with a complimentary glass of Taittinger Champagne. (gothambarandgrill.com)
