BEST of the BEST 2014 | Leisure | Domestic White Wines: Rudd Estate 2012 Sauvignon Blanc Mt. Veeder

Leslie Rudd’s quest for quality is steadfast. His roles as owner of Standard Beverage Corp., chairman of Dean and DeLuca, and owner of Rudd Oakville Estate in Napa Valley have attuned his eye to identifying excellence in all things. His rocky, red-soiled acreage at the foot of the Vaca Mountains in Oakville, for instance, is surrounded by a rather impressive group of neighbors, including Dalla Valle, Opus One, and Screaming Eagle. While the winery produces a range of fine wines consistent with this terroir—including a superb Bordeaux-style blend—one of its most palate-pleasing recent releases is the Rudd Estate 2012 Sauvignon Blanc Mt. Veeder (www.ruddwines.com, $68), a stunningly mineral-rich amalgam of Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Sauvignon Gris that refreshes with flavors of spring mint, ripe melon, lime, and nutmeg.
