Vargellas Vinha Velha’s 80-year-old vines produce grapes so intense with tannins and flavors of black cherry, rich plum, licorice, and peppery black currant that their output is normally reserved for blending. But this fall, Taylor-Fladgate (www.taylorfladgate.com) will release a set of three single-quinta (vineyard) vintage ports from this legendary farm.
The Vargellas Vinha Velha vintages—1995, 1997, and 2000—are three of the vineyard’s most notable years in recent decades. Though still young and concentrated, the ports already rival many of Taylor-Fladgate’s universally declared vintages, and they show promise of becoming classics with additional aging. Taylor-Fladgate is releasing only 100 of the single-quinta wood-encased sets in the United States, at a suggested retail price of $900.
