FrontRunners: Vintners’ Dozen

<< Back to Robb Report, Private Preview 2004

A limited edition sampling of the stellar Cabernet Sauvignons from Napa Valley’s Stags Leap appellation will be made available in October. The Stags Leap District Winegrowers (707.255.1720, www.stagsleapdistrict.com) association’s 2003 Appellation Collection will include each of the current Cabernet Sauvignon releases from its 13 member wineries.

The so-called vintners’ dozen unites such luminaries as Shafer Vineyards, Stags’ Leap Winery, and the Robert Mondavi Winery. Eleven of the wines are from the 2000 vintage, and the remaining two carry a 1999 date.

“We wanted people to be able to taste the appellation in a group and see what makes the wines unique,” says Nancy Bialek, the association’s executive director. The collection also offers oenophiles a one-stop-shopping option. “Nobody could go to a single retailer and get all these bottlings,” she says.

A total of 300 cases (each with a price of $795 plus shipping) will be available from October 1 through November 29. The association’s mailing list is its sole point of sale, and cases are sold on a first-come, first-served basis, with a two-case limit for each buyer.
