Best of the Best 2016: Leisure | Domestic Red Wines: Tyler Winery 2013 Pinot Noir N Block Bien Nacido Vineyard Santa Maria Valley

Justin Tyler Willett is one of California’s rising stars. Following a stint with Arcadian Winery in Lompoc, Willett applied his knowledge and passion to producing wine in the cooler climes of northern Santa Barbara County. His N Block bottling from the Bien Nacido Vineyard’s old vines delivers Californian density and texture with Burgundian aromatic perfume, charm, and elegance.

  • Bien Nacido Vineyard’s N Block boasts ungrafted Martini clones of Pinot Noir first planted in 1973.
  • Willett farms his own vineyards and focuses on low yields and carefully selected fruit.
  • While this wine has roughly 40 percent new French oak, most of his wines see 20 to 30 percent new oak.
  • Roughly 100 cases are produced annually.
