FrontRunners: Into the Fold

<< Back to Robb Report, The Travel Issue

A cross between a Victorian-era penny-farthing and a Segway, the electric YikeBike (www.yikebike.com) can travel as far as six miles at speeds approaching 16 mph on a single charge. A rider sits upright on the 23-pound carbon-fiber frame and steers the bike using its side-mounted handlebars. The YikeBike folds up in under 15 seconds and can be easily carried indoors and plugged into a standard electrical outlet for recharging. The bike, which was developed in New Zealand, is priced at about $3,500 and sold only through the company’s website.
