Eat Fruit and Veggies, Lose Weight
Scientific evidence is amassing to give credence to the adage about the health benefits of eating an apple a day. A new study released from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the University of East Anglia in the UK reveals that eating fruits and vegetables high in antioxidant plant compounds known as flavonoids may help maintain a healthy weight. Apples, pears, berries, and peppers seemed to have the greatest effect on reducing the amount of pounds gained in middle age. The study tracked more than 120,000 men and women over 24 years. The strongest benefits were found from anthocyanins, particularly potent antioxidants found in the pigments of cherries, red grapes, radishes, blueberries, and other berries, and from flavonoid polymers typically found in apples and tea. Eating just a half cup per day of these foods can make a difference, experts say, and perhaps even lead beyond the prevention of weight gain to weight loss.
