Precor Launches Premium Home Gym Equipment

Janice O'Leary

Best known for treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bicycles, and strength equipment in health clubs, Precor is now bringing its commercial-quality equipment to the home gym. The new, redesigned cardio line for consumer use comprises two series: the Energy series and the premium Precision series of treadmills and elliptical fitness cross-trainers. The Precision machines share the exact platform used in the commercial gym equipment, so they are heavier, are smoother underfoot, have more performance capabilities, and come with a 10-year warranty. They are best suited for customers who have come to appreciate that level of quality and want it in their home, says Adam Hubbard, director of product management at Precor.

The company has also stepped up the machines’ technological connectivity. The most advanced console available, the P40, has a touchscreen and integrates with Preva exercise-tracking software and mobile apps through users’ tablets and phones. An exerciser’s data—calories burned, for example, or steps taken—can be stored in Preva and accessed from a smartphone, tablet, or any Precor equipment around the world connected to Preva. Similarly, when using the mobile app while away from the gym, users can capture and integrate that fitness data with their gym program. “We wanted to bring the innovation from the commercial side to the home,” Hubbard says, especially for the growing home-gym population among Baby Boomers. “The population of people who belong to a health club hasn’t moved a lot in recent years,” he says. “But the number of those working out at home has. They are increasingly focused on living longer, healthier lives. But they also have the expectation of premium user experiences with technology.” Prices for machines with the advanced P40 console range from $4,199 to $5,299. (www.precor.com)
