Some 150 years ago, long before Beverly Hills became known for luxury boutiques, movie stars, and magnificent estates, its setting in Southern California was little more than a sleepy settlement of scattered haciendas and free-roaming livestock. Called El Rodeo de las Aguas (Gathering of the Waters) by the Spaniards, the area was revered for the abundant waters that collected from the nearby canyons and, later, for its lively gatherings—rodeos—involving cowboys, horses, and cattle. The city’s most famous street, Rodeo Drive, retains its Spanish pronunciation today.

The landscape of Beverly Hills has changed immeasurably in the century and a half since its settling, most recently with the addition of the new Montage Beverly Hills Hotel and Residences. Drawing inspiration from the city’s roots, the hotel is modeled after the Hotel Alfonso XIII in Seville, Spain. One of a handful of world-class hotels in Beverly Hills, the eight-story Montage is located within the celebrated Golden Triangle—the area formed by the intersections of Crescent Drive, Wilshire Boulevard, and Santa Monica Boulevard—which is home to some of the nation’s most exclusive shops and restaurants.

The Beverly Hills property is the second Montage hotel; the first opened in 2003 in Laguna Beach, Calif. (The company also has resorts under way on a private island in the Bahamas; in Park City, Utah; and in Los Cabos, Mexico.) The new development, which took three years to complete, unveiled its 20 residences and 201 guest rooms in November. Although the past informs its architecture, the structure offers a full range of modern amenities, including a 20,000-square-foot, two-story spa; a restaurant helmed by former Montage Laguna Beach chef John Cuevas; and an 8,500-square-foot rooftop deck with a bar and grill, a mosaic-tiled lap pool, and sweeping views of Beverly Hills and the Hollywood Hills. Adjacent to the hotel, a garden by landscape architect Nancy Goslee Power is taking shape and ultimately will connect Canon and Beverly drives. A new complex on the other side of the garden will accommodate retail shops and a Thomas Keller restaurant.

Montage Beverly Hills’ top three floors house the residences, the most stunning of which is the 5,760-?square-foot seventh-floor pied-à-terre included in this gift. The unit features a gallery-style living room with a grand fireplace; a library/screening room with a bar; a wine cellar; a European-style kitchen; a master suite with a fireplace, walk-in closets, and his-and-hers bathrooms that include steam showers and soaking tubs; three guest bedrooms; and north- and east-facing views. Montage’s residences are sold unfurnished, but the recipient of this gift will work with Cheryl Rowley—a Beverly Hills–based interior designer who operates in a range of styles and is best-known for her projects with such major hotel brands as Mandarin Oriental and Ritz-Carlton—to create a bespoke decor. Once the custom home is completed, the owner will host a housewarming dinner for 12 guests catered personally by Wolfgang Puck, whose flagship restaurant, Spago, is located directly across the street from Montage. In each subsequent year through 2020, the homeowner will enjoy a dinner for 14 guests at the chef’s table inside the hotel’s signature restaurant, Parq.

The buyer will also be granted 14 nights per year (through 2020) in the 2,000-square-foot Catalina Suite at Montage’s oceanfront property in Laguna Beach. In addition, this gift confers access to the spa facilities at both Montage properties, as well as one treatment per week through 2020.
