Back to Black
While fashion designer Alexander Wang is used to dressing the body, his desire to adorn the home has recently been revealed in a new collection with iconic Italian leather manufacturer Poltrona Frau. The creative director of Balenciaga, as well as creator of his namesake brand of noir clothing, often described as downtown-luxe, Wang collaborated with Poltrona Frau on a line of exclusive lounge furniture that appears cool, relaxed, and modern—a giveaway to the pieces’ chic provenance.
In development for nearly two years, the capsule collection features seating and a portable bar cabinet envisioned as a place to hang out in the home and decked in Wang’s signature all-black aesthetic. Each piece is made at Poltrona Frau’s factory in Tolentino, Italy, with attention paid to every detail. The hinges featured on the Trunk Bar ($18,500) are custom-crafted and the interior is lined with black suede and includes polished steel edging. Wrapped in black shagreen, the piece sits on recessed steel wheels and moonlights as a table when closed. When open, the trunk performs as a mini bar with shelves that can host a variety of glasses, bottles, and cocktail accessories.
For his sophisticated revise of the beanbag chair, Wang tamed the traditionally amorphic form by tailoring it in a choice of Poltrona Frau’s shearling and matte black leather. The detailed upholstery and hand-selected materials are hallmarks of the 103-year-old Italian company, which has collaborated with iconic designers such as Gio Ponti, Andrée Putman, Peter Marino, and Paola Navone. Indulging in Wang’s edgy, luxury vibe, the chairs ($8,800 each) are perched on faceted polished bronze-plated bases and ready for cocktail hour. The collection is available for purchase in February at Poltrona Frau showrooms. (poltronafrau.com)
