De Gournay Opens Two Showrooms in China for Wall Coverings and Furnishings

In June, the London wallpaper and furnishings brand de Gournay expanded into Asia, adding showrooms in Beijing and Shanghai to its repertoire of five stores in London, New York, Paris, Istanbul, and Moscow. To celebrate, the nearly 30-year-old company also released a new collection of handmade wallpaper, which currently graces the walls of both new stores.

The Emperor’s Collection (priced from $1,250 per 3-foot-wide panel) draws inspiration from traditional 18th-century Chinese paintings, depicting vibrant mountainous landscapes with tree-lined ponds and lakes. Like all of de Gournay’s hand-painted wallpapers, which utilize a variety of materials, including silk and dyed India tea paper, each panel of the Emperor’s Collection is the work of a half-dozen skilled artisans based near Shanghai. “To me the most exciting thing about the [Emperor’s Collection] is that although the references that inspired it date back earlier than any references we use for any of our other collections, it seems to be most well-suited to use in very contemporary interiors,” notes de Gournay’s director, Hannah Cecil Gurney, who now oversees all seven of the brand’s outposts. “The designs create a Zen mood that suits a minimalist and modern design aesthetic; the antiqued textured surfaces of the wallpapers can create interesting juxtapositions with the very clean modern finish of contemporary art, furniture, and lighting.”

In addition to being the first showrooms to have the Emperor’s Collection grace their walls, Beijing and Shanghai are currently the only showrooms to offer the collection, which will be made available globally later this fall. Accompanying the Emperor’s Collection in both showrooms is de Gournay’s full line of handcrafted wallpaper, fabrics, furniture, and porcelain. (degournay.com)
