FrontRunners: Perfect Case

<< Back to Robb Report, November 2006

In 1945, Arts & Architecture magazine initiated the Case Study House program, which commissioned designs of 36 houses from Charles and Ray Eames, Richard Neutra, Craig Ellwood, and other innovative modern architects. The Pierre Koenig Case Study House #21, a steel-and-glass home constructed in the mid-1950s in the Hollywood Hills, remains one of the more famous of these projects. In this residence, which is surrounded by five reflecting pools, San Francisco-born architect Koenig seamlessly blended interior and exterior spaces. Glass walls open for ventilation, and water is pumped from the pools up to the roof, where it cascades over the eaves, eliminating the need for air-conditioning. On December 3, Chicago’s Wright auction house (www.wright20.com) will place the 1,320-square-foot, two-bedroom house on the block, at an opening bid of $2.5 million. The homeowner’s collection of rare furniture and artwork will be auctioned as well. . . .
