King of the Hill

Hagy Belzberg has been responsible for some of Los Angeles’s most arresting public spaces, from the deeply affecting Museum of the Holocaust to the refreshingly contemporary Patina restaurant at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. With his latest endeavor, however, the architect has taken a more private approach. The 1-acre residential compound, which Belzberg’s Santa Monica, Calif.–based firm completed in July, is located at 1232 Sunset Plaza Drive, just above the bustling Sunset Strip, but its mountainside perch affords ample privacy thanks to strategic landscaping and carefully placed windows, the latter of which take in the views without sacrificing discretion.

Walnut floors and expanses of glass abound in the 10,500-square-foot main house. Among the primary spaces are six bedrooms and seven bathrooms—including a master bath with a 48-square-foot shower—as well as a home theater, a glass-walled wine cellar, and a kitchen with Miele appliances and Carrara marble counters. There is also a 60-foot-long swimming pool. Opposite the main house is a garage with a second-floor gym, and a 1,750-square-foot guesthouse with two bedrooms occupies the property’s highest point. The entire estate affords sweeping views that extend from downtown to the ocean.

Listed at $28.8 million, the property is available for sale through Mauricio Umansky at the Agency, 424.230.3701, www.theagencyre.com.
