When Christopher Gow teamed up with Jamie Creel near the end of 2012 to expand upon Gow’s previous retail business, two things changed. The name of the store became Creel and Gow (www.creelandgow.com), and the location moved from Madison Avenue to a 1,000-square-foot showroom in the former stables of the architect Grosvenor Atterbury’s townhouse on East 70th Street—a spot that Gow had always envisioned as the ideal location for his shop. The street allows enough space for planting sidewalk gardens between the buildings and the road, and that, Gow explains, adds to the shopping experience that he provides. “Before you even get into the store you’re decompressing, as it were,” he says.

Gow first made his mark in the home decor and gifts market more than 15 years ago when he introduced silver-coated seashells. “They remind people of their childhood and being on vacation,” he says. “It’s a reminder that sometimes the simple things are the most beautiful.”

Since that time, he has continuously updated his store’s offerings and today procures a variety of decorative items ranging from oceanic pieces to gifts and everyday tools made from precious metals and minerals. “The products that we have and we strive to have are the ones that you don’t see elsewhere,” he says, adding that they range in price from $20 up to $40,000. “It’s the idea that when you give something as a gift, you know that the recipient hasn’t seen it everywhere.”
