In 2012, Los Angeles–based architectural conservator and interior designer Xorin Balbes finished converting a century-old plantation estate on Haleakala Crater’s western-facing slope into Lumeria Maui—a 6-acre retreat that focuses on yoga and wellness. Now, just in time for the New Year’s influx of healthy resolutions, Balbes has introduced several improvements to the Hawaiian neocolonial-style resort, including an outdoor saltwater pool with an eight-person Jacuzzi, and an event pavilion that seats 100 or accommodates 60 for yoga classes. The main highlight, however, is the new 1,100-square-foot Ali’i Suite, which features Douglas fir floors and sisal rugs throughout the open one-bedroom layout. Outside, an expansive lanai with Indonesian daybeds and an antique Swedish dining table, ideal for alfresco meals, offers views of Maui’s famous North Shore and the West Maui Mountains. Indoors, furnishings include internationally sourced antiques such as a late-19th-century English walnut canopy bed and a Venetian armoire, Balinese side tables, brass Moroccan chandeliers, and Japanese tansu vanities. Balbes also included one-of-a-kind, wellness-inspired art pieces like a large amethyst crystal from his personal collection, a Tibetan thangka, and an incense burner from India. A private chef and personal in-room yoga classes are available to Ali’i Suite guests, and rates range from $699 to $899 per night.
