Top Shops June 2014: A Fresh Polish

  • Amanda Millin

After five years showing solely at art fairs and shows, the Silver Fund (www.thesilverfund.com), the foremost source of Georg Jensen estate silver, has opened a boutique in Palm Beach, Fla. The two-story storefront joins the lineup of prestigious galleries on Worth Avenue, including Arcature, Holden Luntz, and Mary Mahoney. As always, the Silver Fund offers an impressive collection of Jensen silver, including a rare circa-1930s fish platter with a domed lid ($225,000), designed by the Danish craftsman’s trusted colleague and former apprentice Harald Nielsen.

At 2,500 square feet, the shop is roughly five times the size of the former New York and London outposts, allowing the 18-year-old dealer to expand beyond Jensen’s flatware, hollowware, and jewelry. This spring, the 500 pieces in stock at the Palm Beach store included Italian and American furniture and decorative arts from the 1950s to 1970s, as well as 1940s Murano glass and vintage Cartier clocks and watches. Other noteworthy pieces include a pair of circa-1880 vases ($110,000 for the pair) made by the Kun He silversmith workshop and a 1930s Puiforcat sterling silver gilt soup tureen and tray ($135,000), featuring aventurine handles and engravings of Earl Alexander of Tunis’s coat of arms.

“It’s a real game changer,” founder and CEO Michael James says of the new space. “There is a complete lifestyle feel. It’s the best store we have ever had.”
