Bulgari Celebrates Elizabeth Taylor’s Role in Cleopatra with A Charity Auction

  • Tanya Dukes

The actor Elizabeth Taylor had a longtime love affair with Bulgari jewelry, which prompted the Italian jewelry house to create a one-of-kind pair of earrings out of 18-karat gold, spinels, turquoise, and diamonds to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the movie release of Cleopatra. With a graphic, geometric shape and vivid colors inspired by ancient Egypt, their contemporary design looks like something plucked from the film’s costume department. It will be on the auction block at Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels sale on December 11 in New York.

In tribute to Taylor’s tireless advocacy for people living with HIV/AIDS, the jewelry house will contribute the entire proceeds from the sale of the earrings to the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation. The estimated sale price is $18,000, but with the ebullient state of this year’s auction market, it won’t be surprising if they sell for much more. (www.sothebys.com)
