In 1940, Shirley Temple’s stepfather paid $7,210 for a cushion-cut, fancy deep blue diamond ring in celebration of the child actress’s 12th birthday and her 44th film release, The Blue Bird. At the time, colored diamonds were not as popular as they are in today’s market, and it is believed the title of the film largely inspired the purchase. The 9.54-carat art deco ring remained in the child-star-turned-diplomat’s possession until her death in 2014—more than seven decades after she received it. Now the exceptional Shirley Temple Blue Diamond is expected to garner as much as $35 million at Sotheby’s Magnificent Jewels auction in New York on April 19.

And colorful diamonds like this continue to collect high prices at auctions around the globe. For expert analysis on this phenomenon and tips on other essential jewelry collectables, see Three Smart Jewelry Investments. (sothebys.com)
