Can eating a certain mix of foods actually make you live longer? Humans are hard wired to seek food diversity, yet too easily fall into meal ruts that leave us missing crucial vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Harvard School of Public Health found that variety in a healthy diet can affect longevity. A group who regularly ate 16 or 17 items from a healthy food list had significantly lower mortality rates than those who ate zero to eight items from the list. Each healthy food that participants added to their diets lowered their risk of death by five percent. Not surprisingly, foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grain breads, cereals, fish, and low-fat dairy were all deemed healthy in the study.
