The Solage Calistoga resort, nestled in a canyon in California’s Napa Valley, is home to the 20,000-square-foot Spa Solage, which offers healing, relaxing, and soothing services. Since 2007, guests of the spa have enjoyed treatments that use natural ingredients, from a seasonal hydrating green-tea massage and body wrap to the Mudslide, a three-part experience that involves having your body slathered with a custom blend of mineral-enriched clay and volcanic ash, soaking in a bath of mineral water from the property’s hot spring, and then being wrapped in down on a vibrating lounge chair.
Starting this month, the spa began expanding its offerings with new treatments tailored just for men. First on the menu is the Gentleman’s Organic Male Facial ($135 for 50 minutes, or $198 for 80 minutes). For normal skin types, it starts with a deep cleansing using a small-batch nutrient wash, followed by a refreshing toning treatment and extractions. The facial concludes with a rehydration of the skin using an environmental-defense moisturizer that contains grape-seed oil, shea butter, aloe vera, green tea, and acai. The treatment features products from the Organic Male OM4 skin-care line, which was developed to address the specific needs of men’s skin. A man’s skin is typically thicker than a woman’s and has smaller pores, which means that vitamin-rich serums intended for cellular repair need to be matched to penetrate those pores. Because shaving often removes the top protective layer of skin, the face of a man who shaves might actually be more sensitive to environmental damage from sun and wind, and his skin may appear drier as a result, making hydration a priority for protection.
