In 2004, Ducati dove into uncharted waters with an all-new machine that catered to adventure-seeking riders, an emerging segment of the motorcycle market. The Multistrada—with an appearance and functionality that detoured significantly from those of the racer-based machines in Ducati’s stable—was a bike equally capable of serving as a daily commuter, sportbike, or tourer. It was an instant, albeit unusual-looking, hit.
The latest addition to the expanding Multistrada lineup is the Ducati Multistrada 1000s DS ($14,000). At 432 pounds, it is a relative featherweight among tourers. Its signature Ducati trellis frame holds a powerful, air-cooled, 992 cc Desmodromic L-twin engine that produces a robust 92 hp at 8,000 rpm. Top-of-the-line Öhlins suspension components and Brembo brakes with braided steel lines provide superior sportbike performance that, when combined with the Multistrada’s upright seating position, affords increased maneuverability and control—as well as comfort.
An impressively versatile motorcycle, the Multistrada lives up to its name, which is Italian for “many roads.
