21 Ultimate Gifts: Next Stop: the Macallan

The Macallan distillery is offering an intriguing seven-day trip that will take you and a guest from Spain to Scotland to show you how whisky becomes the Macallan. The trip will begin with a first-class flight from Chicago or New York to Jerez, where you will dine with sherry producer Gonzalez Byass, visit a cooperage where sherry casks are made, and lunch at El Agastado, a small, family-owned vineyard. Afterward, you will stop at Gonzalez Byass Bodega and Visitor Centre to see the sherry-filled casks that will one day hold youthful batches of the Macallan.

On the third day, you fly from Jerez to Edinburgh, Scotland, where you will stay overnight before boarding the Royal Scotsman for the trip to Nairn, the train stop nearest to the distillery. Along the way, you will stop for a tour of the Highland Folk Museum in Kingussie, a round of clay pigeon shooting at the Rothiemurchus estate near Aviemore, and a visit to Cawdor Castle in Inverness, Shakespeare’s inspiration for the setting of Duncan’s murder in Macbeth. At the end of the ride, a limousine will transport you to Castle Stuart, which lies 11 miles from the distillery in Craigellachie. This historic castle, once the home of King Charles I of England and bonny Prince Charlie, will be your home for the next two nights.

On the sixth day, you will visit the nearby Macallan distillery, where you will be treated to a personal tour of the facility and lunch at Easter Elchies House, the 18th-century manor that serves as the spiritual home of the brand. There, the Macallan whisky maker Bob Dalgarno will present you with the Macallan Fine & Rare Collection, which includes one 750ml bottle and one 50ml miniature of each of the 37 vintages bottled from 1926 through 1972. The collection’s highlight is the coveted 60-year-old 1926 vintage (bottled in 1986), one of only 40 bottles ever produced. Also rare is the 49-year-old 1953 vintage, bottled in a limited edition of 100. The junior component of the collection is a 29-year-old that was introduced to the cask in 1972 and bottled in 2002, resulting in 64 bottles of a dark, rich, spicy spirit.

In Scotland, you will ride The Royal Scotsman and stay in medieval-castles-turned-luxury hotels.

Capping the week of festivities will be a Fashan Ur dinner, a multicourse meal in which each course is paired with a particular whisky (in this case, different types of the Macallan), served in the dining room of Easter Elchies House.

Price: $196,500.

Contact: The Edrington Group, Patricia Lee, +44.1738.493749, plee@edrington.co.uk. This gift is available to only one reader. The whisky collection will be delivered through a local retailer.
