The Best of the Best 2003: Golf Communities - Hokuli'a

Developer Lyle Anderson’s newest community is Hokuli’a on the Big Island of Hawaii. It could be Anderson’s reputation for combining exquisite, resortlike amenities with high-value real estate (Desert Mountain, Desert Highlands, Superstition Mountain, and Las Campanas) that has buyers back on the mainland lining up for the Hokuli’a lots, which start at $1 million. Or it could be the peaceful, almost spiritual setting of this 1,550-acre site, which was once the playground of Hawaiian kings and queens. Indeed, a number of archaeological sites are scattered throughout the property, including in and around the fairways and greens of the new Jack Nicklaus–designed golf course—the 11th collaboration between Anderson and Nicklaus.

The course is now open, and construction of the first homes will soon be under way. Also being built are an architectural gem of a clubhouse and a beach club and spa.
