Best Of The Best 2006: Found At Sea

<< Back to Robb Report, June 2006

Hampton Island does not appear on maps, and the 4,000-acre community, which sits between Savannah and Sea Island off the coast of Georgia, intends to remain a mystery to all but its handful of members. The developers of the barrier island are offering only 163 homesites, ranging from one-acre properties overlooking marshland ($600,000) to 100-acre horse farms ($3 million). Homeownership will include privileges at Hampton Island’s Davis Love III–designed golf course; access to four spas, each of which celebrates a different aspect of the island (the Farm House Spa, for instance, is located in a six-acre organic farm and offers treatments that incorporate the plot’s herbs and botanicals); and use of a 900-acre equestrian facility and a separate 1,000-acre hunters’ retreat. Two seaplanes, which can touch down on the community’s underwater-lit runway, will be available to transport members to and from the island.

A select number of Hampton Island memberships are available to nonowners. For $250,000 plus annual dues of $17,500, the members will have access to all of the island’s facilities, including the 17 guest cottages scattered throughout the community, as well as the clubhouse’s wine cellar, which was designed by vintner and fellow member Robert Mondavi Jr.
