Amanera is an antidote to the all-inclusive mega-resorts for which the Dominican Republic has long been known. The sleek 25-villa retreat showcases a minimalist Balinese style that feels surprisingly native to the nation’s jungle-covered northern shore. Part of the 2,400-acre Playa Grande development, the resort is the first Aman property with a golf course—a Robert Trent Jones Sr. design that claims the most oceanfront holes (10) of any course in the Western Hemisphere.

  • Of Amanera’s 25 accommodations, the most impressive is a two-bedroom villa, with features that include a 65-foot swimming pool.
  • The resort sits on a stretch of Playa Grande’s mile-long beach that is ideal for novice surfers.
  • Plant your bare feet in the sand at Club de Playa for a beachside dinner of fresh lobster.
  • Sip Mama Juana at the resort’s bar, where Juan Alberto Martinez—owner of the Dominican Republic’s legendary restaurant Babunuco—frequently holds cigar-rolling classes for guests.
