Domaine de la Baume

An every-leaf-in-its-place French garden would seem out of place at the new Domaine de la Baume in Provence. The 99-acre resort—formerly the country estate of the 20th-century French expressionist painter Bernard Buffet—instead embraces the natural beauty of the surrounding garigue, with the wild and colorful landscapes that once inspired the artist now serving as an inspiring milieu for a handful of guests.

Opened at the end of June by the French hotelier Jocelyne Sibuet, Domaine de la Baume features 15 guest accommodations set in a restored 18th-century manor house. Each uniquely designed room (priced from $537 to $2,349 per night, including breakfast and dinner) brims with lively toile de Jouy fabrics by Pierre Frey, chosen for their popularity in the 1700s. Bergère armchairs, hand-painted headboards, and a selection of French antiques accent the resort’s four suites, which include the Annabel Suite, dedicated to Buffet’s wife.

Guests can explore Domaine de la Baume’s grounds on foot or on horseback, meandering along unpaved trails past waterfall-fed creeks and through the vegetable rows and olive groves that supply the resort’s restaurant. The garden-to-table French cuisine is accompanied by selections from a well-stocked wine cellar, which includes vintages from Sibuet’s own label, Domaine de Marie.
