Exclusive Hideaways: Quiet on the Caribbean

  • Janine Pouliot

Balmy breezes waft through a cottage’s louvered windows at the Caves in Negril, Jamaica, rustling mosquito netting draped over a king-size bed. Outside, turquoise water laps languidly against rocky cliffs, recalling the Caribbean before high-tech hotels vanquished the landscape and personal watercraft disturbed the calm.

Perched atop a craggy cliff pocked with volcanic grottoes, the Caves consists of 10 handcrafted wood, stone, and thatched-roof cottages on two lushly landscaped acres. Rotating fans ventilate the high-ceilinged accommodations; hand-carved furniture, batik fabrics, native artwork, and outdoor showers further the tropical paradise theme.

Below the cottages, natural caves and outcroppings form secluded nooks, sun decks, and saltwater swimming holes. Coral staircases and ladders provide easy access to the grottoes—and to the 20-foot-deep waters and tropical reef system at the base of the cliffs.

Back up top, a hot tub and saltwater pool complement a spa housed in an airy cottage with endless ocean views. An alfresco deck serves as the spot for most meals, but the ultimate setting for dinner is the flower-filled cave illuminated by dozens of flickering candles with a private table just for two—romance in the Caribbean as it was meant to be.
