FrontRunners: Fairway Fortress

<< Back to Robb Report, September 2003

Planning a golfing trip to Scotland, and seeking accommodations that are private, secluded, and—here is the operative word—secure? What could be safer than a fortified tower on a hilltop?

Fenton Tower (+44.1620.890089, www.fentontower.com) in North Berwick is a fortress amid the links, and as such, it caters to those who prefer a hideaway to a hotel. “Anybody can stay in a hotel,” says Wayne Moran, Fenton Tower’s manager. “But if you stay here, nobody would be the wiser.” Nor would you lack for a good host. Moran previously worked at the venerable Greywalls (selected as Robb Report’s Best of the Best International Golf Resorts for 2003), and he is at the ready to share his knowledge of all things local.

The original tower was built in 1550 but was sacked by Oliver Cromwell and his invaders in 1650. It stood in ruins until 1998, when a two-year restoration transformed the roofless shell into a regal residence that accommodates as many as 12 people comfortably. The fortress is distinct
for its decor. While the common perception of garrison ambience is dark and dank, Fenton Tower’s team of restorers used pastels and natural light to fashion softness into the castle’s interior.

Fenton Tower is available for £1,400 (approximately $2,300) per night, including breakfast and VAT. The tower’s many offerings—aside from the latest in security systems—include an in-house chef and Fenton’s own brand of 25-year-old malt whisky.
