FrontRunners: On the Harborfront

The Harborfront Inn at Greenport (631.477.0707, www.theharborfrontinn.com), which bills itself as the first luxury boutique hotel on the North Fork of Long Island, N.Y., provides an ideal weekend getaway any time of the year. Set right on Greenport Harbor, just 90 miles from Manhattan via car or the Long Island Rail Road, the inn affords guests in most of its 35 rooms the delightful pastime of watching from their private balconies (temperatures permitting) as ferries to nearby Shelter Island and fishing boats glide in and out of the harbor. Green-port, a small, quiet resort village, is also a center for fishing, with boats bringing the day’s catch to local restaurants.
 
It is a short ferry ride from the North Fork to the South Fork, where the razzle-dazzle Hamptons can provide nightlife, but here, vineyards and wineries make up the serene, country setting that greets visitors.
