FrontRunners: Refining Lanai

Now that four seasons completed a $50 million renovation of its Manele Bay resort (808.565.2000, www.fourseasons.com) on the Hawaiian island of Lanai, the hotel chain has begun extensive work on Manele’s sister property, the Lodge at Koele (800.321.4666). Though both locations have championship golf courses, the similarity ends there. Manele Bay overlooks the Hulopoe Bay beach and marine preserve, while the Lodge at Koele sits 10 miles away in the island’s highlands, where temperatures run about 10 degrees cooler. And while Manele Bay’s lanais and stucco walls reflect its beach setting, the exterior and room decor at Koele evoke a Southern plantation, and its lobby, with a stone fireplace and extensive use of wood, resembles a hunting lodge.

Four Seasons, which began managing the properties last year (the resorts are owned by Dole Food Co. owner David Murdock), plans to build two private bungalows next to Koele’s main lodge. The existing 14 suites and 88 rooms will be updated, and a spa/wellness center is in the works. Koele will remain open during the remodeling, which is scheduled for completion in early 2007.
