FrontRunners: Rosewood London

Following a $130 million transformation, the Rosewood London (www.rosewoodhotels.com) swung open its immense wrought iron gates last October to reveal a refined modern hotel that honors its belle epoque roots. Guests entering the 1914 structure on High Holborn pass through a grand carriageway and Edwardian courtyard before arriving at the arched entryway, where a pavonazzo marble staircase rises seven stories beneath a 166-foot-high cupola. Antique mirrors, leather wingback chairs, and lacquer case goods decorate the 306 guest rooms, which include what is perhaps London’s most impressive accommodation: The 6,318-square-foot Grand Manor House Wing features six bedrooms (each with its own Italian-marble bathroom), a private entrance and elevator, and its own postal code.

The Rosewood’s dining options will soon include a brasserie-style eatery and an adjoining delicatessen. For now, guests can enjoy Indian dishes and European-style stews at the hotel’s club-like bar and restaurant, which evokes a classic English gentlemen’s club with herringbone wood floors, midcentury furnishings, and a library of more than 1,000 antique books.
