As part of the recent $40 million overhaul of the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel (www.ritzcarlton.com, 949.240.2000), interior designer Pam Anderson moved the property’s formal crystal chandelier from the main lobby to the fitness room. She also covered the wood paneling in the lobby and hallways with white paint and replaced dated green window shutters in the guest rooms with crushed crystal and glass panels. These and other changes to the 21-year-old cliff-top resort reflect Ritz-Carlton’s company-wide campaign to attune new or existing properties to their surroundings, in this case, the coast of Southern California. A floor-to-ceiling waterfall and a palette of ice blue, cream, and eggplant in each of the spa’s 11 treatment rooms are Anderson’s homage to the Pacific Ocean, the best view of which is from the treadmills near the fitness center’s two-story windows. From this vantage point, you likely will not notice the chandelier hanging above you.
