Jumby Bay, a Rosewood Resort

  • Shari Mycek

A tall, smartly dressed man captains the seven-minute ferry between his home island of Antigua and Jumby Bay, the 40-room private-isle retreat located just offshore. The 300-acre Rosewood Hotels & Resorts property, which closed to guests in 2008, reopened in December following a $28 million overhaul. During the renovation, the resort rebuilt 28 of its suites—which now have vaulted ceilings, four-poster beds, and outdoor claw-foot tubs—and added two 10,000-square-foot Estate Homes to its pool of vacation rentals.

The resort’s first spa, by Rosewood’s Sense brand, also debuted, as did a redesigned dining room that features an open kitchen helmed by Mexican chef Pablo Loza (formerly of Las Ventanas al Paraíso). The island’s original sugar mill houses a fine-dining restaurant with an all-new Mediterranean menu. Jumby Bay’s activities menu now features a number of private retreats designed for couples, including a stargazing session with the resort’s resident astronomer. Off-island excursions can also be arranged, but rarely are: According to the ferry captain, "No one wants to leave heaven." Jumby Bay, a Rosewood Resort, 268.462.6000, www.jumbybayresort.com
