Situated on a tiny island in the Quirimbas Archipelago off the northern coast of Mozambique, Anantara Medjumbe Island Resort is an adults-only retreat that ushers guests back to an era of unspoiled natural beauty. Each of the resort’s 12 thatched beach pool villas spill onto soft sand beaches steps away from the Indian Ocean.

Recently renovated, the retreat now showcases new amenities, including an outdoor four-poster star bed surrounded by lanterns, where couples can retire for the night as they gaze at the star-speckled skies above. Inside, updated decor combines African prints and patterns with deep shades of blue and aqua that mimic the Indian Ocean, creating a visual style that appeals to both the resort’s heritage and location. Private splash pools also feature an aqua mosaic finish.

During their stay, guests can explore Quirimbas National Park, which surrounds the island and is home to an abundance of coral reefs, an ideal place for snorkeling and scuba diving. Guests can also sail to deserted islands for lunch, embark on dolphin- and whale-watching cruises, or participate in 90-minute sailing lessons aboard a dhow—a traditional Arab lateen-rigged boat commonly sailed on the Indian Ocean and characterized by a long overhang forward, a high poop deck, and a low waist. Room rates start at around $595 based on double occupancy. (anantara.com
