Photo Safaris in Patagonia

Brimming with picturesque fjords, glistening glaciers, and exotic wildlife, Chilean Patagonia has long been a photographer’s paradise. Starting this September, shutterbugs of all skill levels can shoot like a pro when they join one of Tierra Patagonia Hotel & Spa’s new puma photo safaris. Led by a team of experts that includes the wildlife photographer Pia Vergara, the marine biologist Rodrigo Moraga Zúñiga, and the veterinarian Cristina Trugeda Harboe, the five-night package (priced from $4,700 per person, all-inclusive) will lead guests on a tracking adventure through the otherworldly landscapes of the Torres del Paine National Park. Along the way, photographers can expect to snap up-close shots of South America’s elusive Big Five: guanacos, South Andean deer, condors, gray foxes, and, of course, pumas.

When guests aren’t chasing the perfect shot, they’ll find plenty of other diversions at the 40-room Tierra Patagonia Hotel & Spa. Debuted in December 2011, the hotel features floor-to-ceiling windows that display picture-perfect views of Lake Sarmiento and, in the distance, the Paine Massif mountain range. Local tinges abound throughout, from colorful woven rugs and rock sculptures in the guest rooms to native organic cuisine and Chilean wine served in the restaurant. Following a long day tracking the Big Five, a visit to the resort’s Uma Spa for a muscle-soothing soak or relaxing massage will certainly be in order. (800.829.5325, www.tierrapatagonia.com)
