The Monaco-based luxury cruise line Silversea launched its third expedition ship, Silver Discoverer, on April 2. The 338-foot, 120-guest ship is scheduled to sail all over the globe, including Micronesia, Melanesia, Polynesia, East Asia, Russia, Southeast Asia, the Kimberley region of northwestern Australia, and subantarctic New Zealand.

For Silver Discoverer, Conrad Combrink, Silversea’s director of expedition planning, elected many ports of call that have never been visited by other cruise lines. The ship’s recently unveiled itineraries cater to travelers who seek an active experience of these destinations. As part of the 13-day cruise to the Bay of Islands in New Zealand (from $9,250 per person), which departs from Auckland, guests will have the opportunity to explore the Waitangi Wharf, share a hangi feast with Maori guides, and paddle out to Haruru Falls in a 50-foot Maori canoe.

Farther north and east, on the 12-day cruise to the Cook Islands (from $10,850 per person), which departs from Lautoka, Fiji, guests can visit Palmerston Island. They will meet its 60 residents, almost all of whom are descendants of William Marsters, who settled on the island in 1863. Other activities available on the Cook Islands cruise—such as swimming and snorkeling in Duke’s Pool (named for the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Phillip, after he visited Palmerson in the early 1970s) or taking a private tour of part of the island with Silversea’s marine biologist—will introduce visitors to the island’s reef fish, sea cucumbers, rays, and sea turtles. Silver Discoverer has more than 40 such adventurous itineraries scheduled through the end of 2015. (877.276.6816, www.silversea.com)
