Sneak Peek: Four Seasons Hotel Shenzhen, China

Jennifer Ashton Ryan

Shenzhen typically attracts domestic tourists and business travelers, but Western leisure guests are also finding their way to the city. The Four Seasons Hotel Shenzhen opened this month amidst a sea of unusual attractions and modern skyscrapers.

Why to Go: If you’ve stayed in Hong Kong before and want to return to the region, give Shenzhen a try. The Hong Kong–adjacent city of roughly 10 million sprung up from a fishing village of a few hundred thousand in the last 30 years. Golfers appreciate access to more than 12 courses, including Mission Hills Golf Course—the world’s biggest, with 216 holes. Adventurous travelers may enjoy the novelty of Shenzhen’s more than 15 theme parks. Some of China’s best beaches, a melting pot of Chinese cuisines, and cutting-edge architecture alongside historic sites are other reasons to experience the city. The smog and traffic are reasons to avoid it.

What to Expect: Four Seasons guests will find what they came for: expertly arranged rooms with every convenience, a well-trained staff, two top in-house restaurants, a lounge, and an advantageous location in the Futian District. Enter the city hotel on the sixth floor of a 26-story mixed-use building across the street from the Shenzhen Convention and Exhibition Center. The weather will be hot and humid in the summer, foggy in the spring, and ideal during the fall and winter months. Thus, the hotel has indoor and outdoor pools and a significant green space on the roof.

How to Get There: Arrange transport from the airport through the hotel or have a card with the hotel’s name printed in Chinese characters; few taxi drivers speak English. Hong Kong International Airport is an hour’s drive, and travel to Macau is convenient by hovercraft ferry or helicopter. (800.819.5053, www.fourseasons.com)
