Gaya Island Resort opened on July 1 on the shores of Pulau Gaya, the largest island in the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park conservation area off the coast of Borneo. It has 121 stand-alone villas (from $190 per night) with views of the ocean and Mount Kinabalu, in addition to two restaurants, a spa, and a swimming pool with floating cabanas and its own bar and lounge. The resort offers picnic excursions on Tavajun Bay—a private beach accessible by boat—as well as cooking classes on Borneo cuisine, golf, scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, and private yacht charters for island hopping.
