The Inn at Cuckolds Lighthouse is not a typical private-island resort.

Why Go: The Cuckolds are two rocky islands off the rugged Maine coast that in the 19th century caused problems for passing ships. The subsequent lighthouse, completed in 1907, was renovated last year and this month becomes a high-end bed-and-breakfast. Owned and managed by the nonprofit Cuckolds Council, this is a private-island retreat like no other. Guests meet the innkeepers, Dan and Barbara Aube, on the mainland, don rain slickers and sturdy footwear, board a 26-foot Navy whaleboat, and ferry to the new two-suite inn a half mile offshore.

What to Expect: Guest may book either the East Suite or the West Suite (from $350), or the entire island (from $2,500 for a two-night stay) so that no public tours or events will be held during their stay. Both suites feature marble bathrooms, as well as beds with locally made, private-label mattresses dressed in Frette linens. Living rooms (not surprisingly) have unobstructed ocean views. The Aubes fix breakfast in the morning, and typically arrange lunch and dinner off the island. Children are not allowed to stay at the property, as the sea can get quite rough, with tides rising and falling more than 10 feet twice a day. (Children 12 and up are permitted on tours.) The experience is advertised to be both exciting and romantic.

How to Get There: The nearest airport is in Portland, Maine, just over an hour by car; Boston is a 3-hour drive. The transfer by Navy whaleboat takes about 20 minutes. Guests arriving in their own boats may reserve one of the Cuckolds’ moorings. (855.212.5252, www.innatcuckoldslighthouse.com)
