Sneak Peek: The Landing Resort & Spa, South Lake Tahoe, Calif.

  • Jennifer Ashton Ryan

The Landing Resort & Spa ups the ante in California’s Tahoe South.

Why Go: At the base of Heavenly Mountain Resort on the California–Nevada border, South Lake Tahoe has been a popular year-round vacation area since the 1960s. The high-rise casinos Harrah’s and Harveys populate the Nevada side of the border, while the California side favors a range of smaller motels. A remake of the former Royal Valhalla motor lodge, the Landing offers 88 rooms (from $110) and one three-bedroom suite (from $330). New installations include marble bathrooms, gas fireplaces, and 55-inch televisions, and most rooms overlook the famously blue Lake Tahoe. The property is adjacent to Lakeside Beach and three blocks from Heavenly Village and the gondola.

What to Expect: This new hotel stands on an old footprint, so expect upgraded furnishings and amenities within reconfigured motel rooms. Nancy and Jim Demetriades, the owners, run several restaurants and a ski resort in Mammoth, Calif. Their penchant for Greek cuisine is evident in the menu items at the Landing’s Jimmy’s Restaurant, including a pulled-lamb burger with beetroot tzatziki and a cake made with tahini, chocolate, and lime. There is a spa with four treatment rooms, a fitness center, and an outdoor pool and 10-person hot tub. Skier-friendly services include a ski-storage room with warmers and dryers for ski boots and complementary shuttles to the Heavenly gondola.

How to Get There: The private Lake Tahoe Airport is just seven miles away, and the Reno airport is about an hour’s drive. Northstar, on the north end of the lake, is also an hour’s drive.
