The Mandarin Oriental Bodrum calls new attention to an exclusive, under-explored stretch of Turkey’s Turquoise Coast.

Why Go: The largest yachts on the Turkish Riviera are favoring the northern rim of the Bodrum Peninsula. A 20-minute drive across the peninsula from the buzzing, tourist-laden city of Bodrum, Torkbuku accommodates sprawling vacation homes and well-dressed crowds. The area is ruggedly beautiful, where the brilliant Aegean Sea meets craggy coastline and undulating green hillsides; the New York Times has quoted locals calling Torkbuku the Saint-Tropez of Turkey. In July, the Hong Kong–based Mandarin Oriental group opened its first European resort just down the road.

What to Expect: The 148-acre waterfront resort is an exciting change of pace for a hotel company with a portfolio of mostly city hotels. The Mandarin Oriental Bodrum encompasses 59 rooms (from about $1,200) and 27 suites, including two four-bedroom villas. Junior suites and above come with an outdoor pool and shower, and guests can also book some of the 214 residences on property. Four separate restaurants serve Italian, Turkish/Mediterranean, international, and South Asian cuisines, respectively, and are supplemented by the Mandarin Cake Shop, four bars, and the Terrace Lounge. At the spa, heat and water facilities are so extensive that guests are advised to show up at least an hour before their scheduled treatment to take full advantage of the sauna and steam. A gorgeous Turkish bath features private scrub rooms. Visiting wellness experts will host weeklong clinics throughout the year. Activities range from wreck diving and Turkish gulet tours to exploring ancient ruins, olive pressing, and more.
