Sneak Peek: Nayara Springs, Costa Rica

The Nayara Springs hot-springs resort opens at the base of Costa Rica’s Arenal Volcano.

Why Go: Arenal Volcano National Park in northern Costa Rica was one of Costa Rica’s most popular attractions when there was visible lava flowing down the mountain. In 2010 the lava stopped flowing, leaving the area’s biodiverse rain forest, natural hot springs, and activity infrastructure (zip-lining, waterfall rappelling, horseback riding, whitewater rafting) to attract visitors. The 16 one-bedroom villas at Nayara Springs (from $590) offer amenities such as butler service, and each has a private plunge pool fed by a natural hot spring, an outdoor shower, and a hammock.

What to Expect: Nayara Springs’ 16 villas are across a ravine from—and connected by a pedestrian bridge to—the 50-room Nayara Hotel Spa and Gardens. Guests can take meals in their villa or patronize their neighbor’s eateries, which include a sushi bar, a wine bar, and a pool bar. Massages can be booked in room or next door at the full-service spa. Active travelers can more than fill their time with local activities, and Nayara’s tranquil atmosphere is rest for the weary.

How to Get There: The drive from Costa Rica’s international airport in San Jose is about 2.5 hours. (888.332.2961, www.nayarasprings.com)
