Sneak Peek: Nomad Tanzania’s Kuro Tarangire and Kigelia Ruaha

Elephant and buffalo herds take center stage at Nomad Tanzania’s newest safari camps.

Why Go: Nomad Tanzania will open two remote safari camps in June. Kuro Tarangire and Kigelia Ruaha lie, respectively, in a migration corridor for buffalo and near areas frequented by elephant herds. Acacia trees surround the former camp, located in northern Tanzania’s Tarangire National Park, which is known for having the second-highest concentration of wildlife in the country after the Serengeti. The latter camp sits on the banks of the Ifuguru Sand River in southern Tanzania. The surrounding Ruaha National Park remains appealingly uncrowded by competing safari groups.

What to Expect: Each camp is just six safari tents (from $450 per person, not including transport or park fees) with heated outdoor bucket showers and eco-flush toilets. Kuro Tarangire will operate from mid-June to mid-November and completely packed up and taken away during the off-season. Travelers should dress for hot days and cool nights. Temperatures around Kigelia Ruaha typically range from about 77 to 84 degrees Fahrenheit from July to October, and the camp’s tents rest year-round in the shade of sausage trees. December to March is more humid but showcases prolific birdlife. Nomad took over the existing camp and began renovations in January in anticipation of the opening in July. Both camps offer safaris by open-air vehicles and on foot, and Kuro Tarangire additionally offers night drives. Meals are served at both camps in an alfresco lounge.

How to Get There: Find Kuro Tarangire by road from Arusha or Manyara. Tarangire National Park’s Kuro Airstrip is just 15 minutes by car. Flights to Kigelia Ruaha are convenient through the Msembe Airstrip within Ruaha National Park. (www.nomad-tanzania.com)
