Sneak Peek: Palacio Nazarenas, Cuzco, Peru

Legendary for its train journeys, Orient-Express has incorporated hotels as part of its repertoire since 1976, and it just unveiled its most ambitious project to date with the opening of Palacio Nazarenas in Cuzco, Peru—the ancient capital of the Incan Empire—on June 15. This Spanish colonial palace and former convent has been intricately restored over the last three years under the supervision of archaeologists and Peru’s National Institute of Culture, thus preserving the history of this nearly 300-year-old structure. Pre-Incan and Incan walls unearthed during the remodel have been incorporated into the 55-suite hotel, and the on-site library serves as an exhibition space for the property’s pre-Columbian artifacts. The suites, which are about $905 per night (price includes breakfast and a personal butler) feature views of either the Incan walls of Sacsayhuamán or Cuzco’s cathedral in the popular Plaza de Armas. An alfresco restaurant overlooking the pool (Cuzco’s first outdoor pool) serves organic Andean cuisine, and a five-room treatment spa offers Incan- and Andean-inspired treatments, which utilize indigenous Peruvian ingredients such as pink Andean salt and purple corn.
