The Sanchaya welcomes guests to discover Lagoi Bay, an upcoming beach-resort destination on the Singapore Strait scheduled to open June 1.
Why Go: Although Bintan Island belongs to Indonesia, its location 45 minutes by ferry from Singapore explains a lot. All along Bintan’s northern coast is an area called Lagoi with family-friendly beach resorts, golf courses, and manicured developments. There is a lot of promise here, as the renderings on various development websites advertise. One of the newest developments, Lagoi Bay will include residences, shopping centers, and five resorts, including the most exclusive 23-acre Sanchaya, where 21 accommodations surround a colonial-style beachfront estate.
What to Expect: The intimate resort plan and ample villa inventory demonstrate an emphasis on privacy. There is space to relax, eat, entertain, and sleep in each villa, as well as walk-in closets, Bang & Olufsen electronics, and a well-stocked wine fridge. The Great House includes nine additional accommodations (from $560) and a dining room that makes a place to meet for meals and drinks throughout the day. A second restaurant, the more casual Tasaee Grill, serves barbecue Thai street food, including seafood, by the main pool. Each of the four treatment rooms at the spa is a stand-alone villa. Golf and water sports are favorite local activities.
How to Get There: Take the ferry from Singapore’s Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal and reach Lagoi in 45 minutes; the Sanchaya is just a 10-minute drive from there. The closest international airport is Singapore’s Changi Airport, although a new international airport on Bintan is projected to open in 2015. (+62.770.692.200, www.thesanchaya.com)
