Sneak Peek: Streamsong Resort, Streamsong, Florida

Jennifer Ashton Ryan

Florida’s Streamsong opens alongside two of the most praised new U.S. golf courses.

Why Go: Go to golf or to appease a golf-loving spouse. This 216-room resort in Polk County, Fla., was not built in an existing vacation destination. Rather, it was built on a former phosphate mine owned by Streamsong’s parent company. The site—with drastic elevation changes, huge bunkers, and deep ponds leftover from the mine, and the expertise of Tom Doak’s Renaissance Design on one set of 18 holes and Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw’s on a second—makes for a novel golf game. The two courses opened in 2013, and now that the resort is running, golfers can travel with their families and make a vacation out of their pilgrimage to inland Florida.

What to Expect: Expense was not spared on the four-story main lodge and the hotel rooms (from $375) at Streamsong. Most of the spacious rooms and suites look onto water features through floor-to-ceiling windows. Abstract artwork and panoramic photographs throughout the hotel reflect the natural surroundings, which are characterized by sand dunes, lakes, and the forever-long Florida horizon. Other than golf, guests can book treatments in the spa, try a guided bass-fishing session, explore surrounding hiking and birding trails, sit by the pool, or visit Streamsong’s heritage area for a local history lesson. A different kind of Floridian education can be had at P205, one of four dining outlets, by ordering a mess of Apalachicola oysters, conch chowder, and key lime pie.

How to Get There: Find Streamsong an hour’s drive east of Tampa and 90 minutes southwest of Orlando. There are no less than six private airports nearby to accommodate guests traveling by private jet. (863.428.1000, www.streamsongresort.com)
