Sneak Peek: Suján Rajmahal Palace, Jaipur, India
The Pink City’s new Suján Rajmahal Palace is a royal-family affair.
Why Go: Staying in a hotel that is also a royal palace is nothing new in India, but Suján Rajmahal Palace stands out for its two-year renovation commissioned by the royal family of Jaipur. The interior of the transformed property is a dizzying array of 46 custom wallpapers and precious objects owned by the royal family, with items from the City Palace’s archives and the royal family’s personal holdings creating a look that is both authentic to the palace and comfortable for today’s travelers.
What to Expect: The hotel is opening with 15 suites (from $550, including breakfast)—it will eventually have a full inventory of 30 rooms—that are hidden within the walled compound in the heart of Jaipur. Former guests of the palace include Jackie Kennedy and Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, and photographs of such former guests’ visits are located throughout the hotel. A spa is scheduled for completion during the second stage of the renovation, but massages and other treatments are currently offered in-room. There are two restaurants, a bar, and a pool. The manager of the hotel is a first-generation hotelier and a friend of the royal family. His company, Suján, runs a small collection of tented camps in India and Kenya known for their attention to detail and impeccable service. Suján’s expertise translates well to the jewel-box Rajmahal.
How to Get There: The hotel is about 12 miles from Jaipur International Airport. (+91.11.4617.2700, sujanluxury.com)
