Sneak Peek: Sun Valley Lodge, Sun Valley, Idaho

The main lodge at America’s first ski resort is reborn.

Why Go: Owned since 1977 by the Holding family of Sinclair Oil, Sun Valley Resort has been well maintained with express ski lifts; marble-clad, on-mountain day lodges; and 45 holes of golf. To access the world-class amenities, many visitors braved small rooms and bathrooms in the resort’s main lodge. But not anymore. In June, the 94-room Sun Valley Lodge reopened following 10 months of renovations. There are now 54 fewer guest rooms (from $329) and five new suites named for famous guests, including Marilyn Monroe and Ernest Hemmingway. A three-story, 30,000-square-foot addition accommodates the new Sun Valley Spa that has 15 treatment rooms.

What to Expect: The historic look and feel of the nearly 80-year-old lodge was maintained through the update. The lobby looks bigger and brighter and is still the heart of the resort, with a roaring fireplace and black-and-white photos of Sun Valley’s glory days decorating the walls. The beloved bowling alley keeps all its 1950s charm but has been expanded to six lanes. The destination spa features treatments utilizing four product lines, and it houses a fitness center, a yoga studio, and an indoor saltwater pool. Surrounding the lodge’s circular outdoor pool is a newly expanded deck space with fire pits and two hot tubs. But it is the lodge’s naturally beautiful location nestled among five mountain ranges that remains its draw. There are over 2,000 skiable acres at the resort and thousands more to explore with Sun Valley Heli Ski. During the summer months, the ski resort facilitates downhill mountain biking. Guests can also fly-fish, hike, swim, horseback ride, play golf, and more.

How to Get There: Fly into Hailey’s Friedman Memorial Airport, which is 14 miles from the resort. (sunvalley.com)
