Outside of Beijing, the dawn of a new lakeside resort destination cannot be missed.

Why Go: Last year, close to 3 million people visited the Mutianyu Great Wall, one of the best-preserved sections of China’s iconic attraction. Nearby, Kempinski has opened a monument of its own that boasts views of and convenient access to Mutianyu. Located about an hour’s drive from Beijing, the globe-shaped Sunrise Kempinski Hotel was built at the edge of Yanqi Lake and was designed look like a 21-story sun coming up over the horizon. The hotel opened at the beginning of this month.

What to Expect: The Sunrise Kempinski, one of 14 hotels within the lakeside Yanqi Island development, has 306 rooms (from $206) and access to the development’s restaurants and bars, expansive meeting spaces, spa, and private marina. The 111-room Yanqi Hotel is also managed by Kempinski and resembles a low-profile lakeside guesthouse. Among the nine dining outlets at the Sunrise hotel are a European bakery, a teahouse, and a Bavarian-style brewhouse. The hotel’s two penthouse-level Diplomatic Suites boast the best views over the scenic lake and forests. In addition to Mutianyu, local attractions include temples, amusement parks, and museums.

How to Get There: Look for Yanqi Lake signs posted on the 35-mile drive north from Beijing Capital International Airport. The Mutianyu Great Wall is about 20 minutes from the hotel. (+86.10.6961.8888, kempinski.com)
