Sneak Peek: Vomo Island Resort, Fiji

Fiji’s Vomo Island Resort reopens following major renovations

Why Go: Set among 20 volcanic islands near Fiji’s capital, Nadi, Vomo Island Resort kicked off 2015 with some major improvements. The 30-villa resort closed in January to gut and redecorate its seven hillside and 21 beachfront villas. The general manager Mark Leslie flew to Bali to source new teak furnishings and building materials for the rooms (from about $1,000 per person, all-inclusive). Swimming distance from the island is Vomo Lailai, an undeveloped atoll used for private beach picnics.

What to Expect: The 225-acre private island is intimate, with a string of stand-alone villas among palm trees on the beach and with several other homes set back on a hill. Most of the island remains untouched. A central great house overlooks the pool, and the Rocks Bar serves as the island’s social hub and best location for sunset vistas. In May, the bar started serving dinner from its new outdoor show kitchen. In addition to a raw bar, the Rocks offers Japanese robata and tandoori- oven dishes on select evenings. The Reef Restaurant in the main house received a new $500,000 kitchen during the overhaul. Not to be overlooked, significant improvements to Vomo Island’s amenities were made last year while the resort remained open. Senikai Spa and fitness center, the PADI dive center, and the adults-only swimming pool are all less than a year old.

How to Get There: Flights by seaplane or helicopter from Fiji’s Nadi International Airport to Vomo take about 15 minutes. Alternatively, the reservations team can arrange an hour-long speedboat ride or a 90-minute catamaran ride from Nadi’s Port Denarau. (vomofiji.com)
